We have two main goals at Ergo Cycle:
1. Get more people cycling
2. Get people who are cycling, to cycle more. By this we do not just mean taking longer bike rides, although this is good as well. We would like to encourage people to integrate their cycles into their lives, not just for recreation, but also for transportation.
It is true that cycling is an excellent form of low-impact cardiovascular activity, but it is also a clean, safe, and efficient form of transportation (see a comparison chart here). Even in a country with a population density as low as Canada, 83% of Canadians live within a 30 minute cycle of a routine destination, according to the findings of the 2004 National Transportation Survey.
However, conventional bicycles, while they are amazing machines in many respects, are ergonomically flawed, and these flaws force many people to cycle less, or not to cycle at all. The most common “over-use” cycling injuries involve neck and back pain- but these have nothing to do with the actual activity of cycling, and everything to do with poor bicycle ergonomics!
We at Ergo Cycle believe that promoting recumbent cycles and cycling ergonomics is part of promoting cycling more generally, by making it easier for people to ride their cycles more often.
